The Tourist visa permits foreign nationals to visit the United States temporarily on short trips for pleasure activities. You can either apply for this visa at a US Consulate or if you are already inside the US, you can request a change of status to the B classification and/or extend your current B classification with US Immigration (USCIS).
Pleasure under the tourist visa is defined as legitimate activities of recreational character, including tourism, amusement, visiting friends or relatives, rest, medical treatment and activities of a fraternal, social or service nature. Employment is strictly prohibited, regardless of any remuneration for room and board. The legal burden of proof is on the applicant to show they meet the visa requirements.
You must have evidence of nonimmigrant intent; this essentially means that you will return to your home country after your temporary stay inside the States. You must have adequate funds to cover expenses during your travel to the United States; the officer must be convinced you can fund your trip to the States. You must also have a residency in your home country.
The following pleasure activities are permitted under the B2 tourist visa: Please note just because they are permitted does not mean the consular officer has to approve you.
- Visiting relatives, friends socially
- Visitors coming for health or medical purposes. Remember the consular officer must be satisfied that you have the means to pay for your medical treatment which includes your hospital costs
- Conventions of social organizations. If you are a participant in amateur sports events, or similar gatherings with no remuneration (you will not be paid). professionals are disqualified even if you are not going to be paid
- Dependents of US armed personnel, dependents of crewman, dependents of US Citizen (USC) or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) coming to accompany or follow to join the USC or LPR
- Persons coming to US to get engaged, marry a US citizen provided you intend to depart afterward
- Non-spouse partners known as household members – this is explained on our website

When the consulate approves your tourist visa, they will issue the visa into your passport. They will grant up to 10-years for the business visa. You will be permitted to enter the States for up to 6 months per visit.
